Clint Dempsey scored three goals, Fulham scored four. Charlton Athletic, none. Onto the next round of the FA Cup, where Fulham travels to Everton. With Landon Donovan on loan, Tim Howard in net and Marcus Hahnemann backing him up, it'll probably feature most American talent on display in a single fixture outside of the United States ever.
As a very Fulham-centric blog, perhaps this may seem a little out of place. But, if you have followed some of my prior postings on here, you may have established that I have a soft spot for the League of Ireland. Today, Shamrock Rovers pulled off a major upset and perhaps the biggest win in European play in the league's history, defeating Partizan Belgrade 2-1 in extra time in Belgrade to secure a 3-2 aggregate win. Above is Pat Sullivan's beautiful second-half volley. The goal leveled the scores and allowed the match to reach extra time, where Rovers triumphed after a late penalty. This is the first time an Irish side has reached the group stage in European play in any competition. Major kudos to the Hoops for what they accomplished.
For as dour and ultimately disappointing as Fulham's opening day draw against Aston Villa was, this replay of Marc Albrighton's wide effort did an impressive job of encapsulating the essence of fandom at a live match. Just pay attention to the reaction of the Villa supporters near the very end of the clip. Priceless.
