Martin Jol has admitted that, despite his intention to create a new, youthfully exuberant Fulham side, he would like to tie captain Danny Murphy down to a longer contract.

After hearing of the former Liverpool midfielder's intentions to stay in football for at least another season, quashing any retirement rumours, Jol suggested that Murphy, who has been at Craven Cottage since 2007, is part of the "playing culture" at Fulham.

"He is part of our playing culture," the Dutchman said. "That is what you see most of the time.

"He is our link-up player and if he is not there you get a different style."

Despite his significance to the team, however, the central midfielder's contract runs out at the end of the season and Jol is moving quickly to arrange a new deal.

"[I can see him staying for at least another year] if we can agree on the terms as we have offered him a new deal."
